3 Ways To Tell If You Need New Wiring

Electrical wiring is one of those domains that people prefer to ignore because they don't know exactly how the wiring works. This can be problematic because, if the wiring should go out completely, you risk being in a house with no electricity until an electrician can come to fix the problem and rewire the house.

In order to avoid a complete lack of electricity, look for these three warning signs that might indicate you need to have your house rewired:

1. You Blow a Fuse Frequently

Blowing a fuse, while not especially problematic, can be a sign that your wiring is under more stress than it can handle. You can use a circuit breaker to protect the wiring if your fuses don't seem up to the challenge, but this can be a bandage on a more serious situation. Check to make sure that your fuses are able to handle the current number of appliances that are plugged into the electrical system.

If there are more appliances plugged in than can be handled, just reduce that number. However, if you are well beneath the number of watts that your system can handle, this could indicate that there is a short in the wiring somewhere in your house and that you might need to call an electrician to get that resolved.

2. Your Lights Flicker

If your lights flicker regularly, that could be a sign that your circuits are overloaded and that the circuit breaker is not functioning properly. Call an electrician if your circuit breaker is old in order to have it replaced. It is important that a licensed electrician perform this task in order to make sure that a circuit breaker with the right watt level is installed, rather than one that is too high or too low.

3. Your Outlets Shock You

If you have one or more outlets that shock you when they are touched, this could indicate that there is a short in the wiring right around that area. In order to make the outlets less painful to use, contact an electrician to have the wiring repaired. If the problem ends up being in the outlet itself, the electrician will be able to repair the outlet on the spot, without having to wait for parts to be ordered.

Contact a local electrician if there are problem's with your home's wiring. He or she will be able to schedule an appointment to look at the problem. To learn more, contact a company like Narducci Electric with any questions or concerns you have.
