4 Tips For Troubleshooting Your Boiler

Using a boiler to heat your home with hot water can be very efficient. Unfortunately, troubleshooting a boiler is quite different than troubleshooting a furnace. Here are 4 problems you could have with your boiler, and what you can do about it.

Boiler Not Producing Heat

The water may be in the pipes, but if it is not producing heat throughout your home, you have a problem on your hands. This could be due to a faulty thermostat, low water levels in your boiler, a lack of power running to your boiler, or a malfunctioning pilot light.

Start by checking the fuse box, as the boiler could have blown a fuse. Then investigate the thermostat for potential problems, followed by verifying the water levels in the boiler. If everything looks normal, you will need a plumber to fix the issue for you.

Water Is Warm, But Not Getting Hot

The boiler is working and the pipes feel warm, but it's not getting as hot as it should. The best way to troubleshoot this problem is by determining how quickly the problem happened. Slow and gradual decreases in temperature can be due to sediment buildup in the boiler's heat exchanger. This issue can by solved by flushing the system and getting rid of all the sediment.

Sudden temperature drops can be due to the boiler's water levels dropping quickly. This will require professional help to determine what caused the water to drop so fast.

The Boiler Is Leaking Water

Water is bound to leak from your boiler at some point, but the water could be leaking from a variety of places. When you notice puddles forming next to your boiler, it could be caused by a water pipe that is leaking, a broken pressure relief valve, or a malfunctioning water pump.

These issues are tough to fix if you do not have any experience dealing with leaks. Contact a plumber to have them repair the problem.

The Boiler's Expansion Tank Is Full

The expansion tank 's purpose is to hold extra water in the system that occurs when water gets too hot. If the boiler's expansion tank fills, it could be from the tank not being properly pressurized. You most likely do not have the tools to pressurize the tank, so hire a professional like Biard & Crockett Plumbing to help.

By being aware of potential problems with your boiler, you'll have them fixed before they turn into big issues.
