Many people are intimidated about renting and using a paint gun. As a result, most property owners end up painting with rollers and paint brushes. There is nothing wrong with this, except it takes much longer. Painting is almost always quicker if you use a pneumatic paint gun. In actuality, using a paint gun is not very difficult at all. The hardest part is probably keep the gun clean and ensuring that the nozzle does not get clogged. This article explains how to keep your gun clean throughout the process.
A clean gun will ensure that there are no clogged lines or nozzles. Even small clogs in a paint gun can cause problems with the pneumatic system. This could seriously hamper the operation of the gun and create a problem that you are not able to fix. This is why cleaning the painting is necessary and preventative.
When to Clean
First, you will want to clean your gun thoroughly at the end of every day of painting. However, you will also want to quickly clean your nozzle whenever you are taking a break from painting. For instance, if you are going to take a 1 hour lunch break, you should remove the nozzle and soak it in a cup of water. You can pull right out of the gun with your finger. With your fingertip, wipe away any paint build up around the spray tip. Add a pinch of paint thinner to the water cup to help break down dried up paint. If you are painting on a hot, dry day, you might want to clean the nozzle after breaks as short as 30-minutes.
Cleaning At the End of the Day
At the end of every day of painting, you will need to clean out the entire paint gun system by flushing it with water. Leave the nozzle in place for this task. First, change the paint can that the reservoir is in, with bucket of water (of the same size). You will need a large surface to spray onto (besides the surface you are painting). A large piece of wood or cardboard should work fine. Spray the gun until only water is coming out. This means that your hose and gun are now free of any paint. Then, remove the nozzle and place it a cup of water to soak overnight.
