How To Use The Hues In Your Pool Design

When designing a new pool, few homeowners give a lot of thought to the colors that they will choose for the pool and its surrounding area. But modern pool technology and materials means that you have a myriad of color choices beyond traditional blue and white. So, how can you choose colors that are best for your own new pool? Here are 4 ways to use color in your pool design for specific results.

Emphasize the Scheme

The pool is just one part of the yard's and home's overarching design. To make the pool feel integral to the rest of the home, choose complementary colors that work with the exterior and even the nearby interior rooms' decoration. This can mean choosing an outdoor tile color for the pool's surroundings that matches the home's interior flooring, for example. Or it may include matching the pool's hues to the natural elements of the yard, such as sky, flowers or yard architecture.

Create Mood

Color can also set the tone and mood for the pool. A dark color palette may suggest classical tones or sophistication, whereas a more neutral one can make people feel a sense of ease and relaxation. Choose the tone you want to set, then work with your pool designer to determine how to build that into your color scheme.

Create Art

The opposite of trying to tie in the pool to the rest of the home is to use it as a piece of art. Bold colors, fanciful murals or mosaics or unique tile choices can transform the pool from a functional piece into a focal point for the whole yard. To include artistic effects into your color choices, look for fiber optic lighting that comes in many colors and can be used to create various effects such as floating stars or underwater glows. Or opt for colored glass tiles or pebbles that can be woven into your pool's concrete and other places.

Make it Fun

An especially appropriate pool style for families is to emphasize the fun and youthfulness of having the swimming pool around. This can entail bold colors and oversized designs on the pool, such as a rainbow-style pool bridge or a set of poolside umbrellas painted to match giant mushrooms that Alice might have found in Wonderland. Colorful slides or a fun architectural feature like a whale's tale or a floating sea monster can make your pool a place of imagination for kids of all ages.

Once you know what you want from the colors in your pool design, you can begin to make the right choices as to how to use those colors. The result will be a pool you can enjoy both in and out of the water.
