Keep Your Little One From Clogging The Drains

Children are quite the inquisitive characters. Children aren't only interested in different objects, but they also want to see how they work. Their investigative mindset can create problems in the bathroom, especially when it comes to clogged drains. If you're the parent of a young child, learn what steps you can take to prevent clogged drains, and what you can do if you're presented with the problem.

Monitor Bath Toys

If your child isn't exactly excited about bath time, you probably allow him or her to bring along toys in the bathtub. Make sure you monitor the types of toys they bring along if you want to keep safety in mind.

For the most part, you don't want to allow any toys in the tub that are small enough to fit down the drain. For example, a tiny action figure could fall into the pipe and get stuck. Depending on where in the drain the toy stops, it could cause a considerable obstruction. The drains are safer with larger toys.

Install Drain Covers

You should also install drain covers in both the tub and the sink in the bathroom. Once your child discovers that water goes down the drain, they may get fascinated by the idea and want to discover what else might go down the drain.

Toothpaste tops, large pieces of soap, and other items in the bathroom can all end up down the drain and can all lead to a costly clog. Drain covers are designed with small holes that only allow water to flow down the drain. Any other items in the sink or tub will get caught by the cover.

Clog-Fighting Mistakes

Sometimes clogs happen without any one specific cause. For example, dental floss, soap scum, and hair naturally build up in the drain over time from everyday use.

If you face a typical clog, avoid the urge to stick anything down the drain to try and remove the obstruction. Not only can the object you're sticking down the drain get stuck, but you could also cause pipe damage.

Chemical clog-fighting solutions should also be a no-go. The chemicals in these solutions are sometimes strong enough to eat away at the pipe material.

Lastly, don't assume the clog will go away on its own and think you can ignore it. If you ignore the clog and continue to use the drain, the problem will only get worse.

Sometimes even when you're careful, a clog can occur. However, make sure you aren't making any of the potentially costly, clog-fighting mistakes. Contact a plumbing service such as West Sound Plumbing Service to discuss your options for resolving the problem.
